With Heartfelt Thanks

This spring, with the help of volunteers, we began a campaign to raise $10,000 for our six year-old daughter Phoebe. We needed a hyperbaric chamber, among other things, to help her grow neurologically. Thanks to your help, and the help of people nationwide, we purchased the chamber, and some other equipment necessary for the in-home program we do with her each day. We greatly exceeded our goal and you greatly exceeded our expectations!

Even after the first treatment we could see an improvement. She would get out of the chamber and immediately start stringing words together coherently, which she hadn't been able to do before. During the summer she acquired many new words and sentences, and would even sing her favorite songs to us. She now remembers the past and anticipates the future; she asks questions and attempts to meet her own needs. To our delight and surprise, one day she asked our volunteer Morgan, who was having lunch with us, "Do you like it?" To think about someone else in such a way, and to articulate a question of interest confirms what we always suspected - Phoebe is longing to engage this world and to participate in it with investment and love. She is more alert and aware of her surroundings now, and more conscious of her behavior and how it affects others.

Phoebe has come a long way since the start of hyperbaric therapy and we have all of you to thank for it. Each night we give thanks for a name on this list, lighting a candle during prayer time in remembrance. We remind all of our children that we held up and sustained by a whole network of people whose lives intersect with our own, to enrich us and make us better than we could be alone. We look forward to the day when we can show Phoebe this list of names, and to say to her with gratitude, "Look, Phoebe! Look at all these loving people who support you ! May we one day be able to give to others with such abundance and generosity!"

Phoebe has along way to go, but don't we all! Because of the success of the "Phoebe Fund" and because of the great strides she's made these few months, we can say for the first time, with confidence, "She is going to be okay!" Thanks for accompanying us on this journey toward wholeness and healing.

Special thanks to: Brian and Laura Sapino for circulating fliers, to Erika Pugh for working so hard with Phoebe, (Saint) Ellen Bailes for assuming we could pull this off and making it happen, Beth While and Charlotte Jump for being a part of the process. Thanks too, to those who gave anonymously. The Phoebe Fund generated gifts from 28 states!

With Gratitude and Love,

Erdal Adam and Mrie Hulme Adam
